  1. "My Chinese name Yueh Shia. it mean Lunar and color you see in sky at sunset". Riding the train back to Taipei after a day hiking around Toroko National park in the mountains of central Tiawan i was almost in a doze when she sat down next to me. After greeting her in my limited Mardarian our conservation opened as it frequently does in an Asian country when i make even a little effort to speak the language.
Yueh is an attractive 28 year old tiawanese woman who works for a company that interperts satellite images into maps of the landscape of Tiawan as it probably appeared millions of years ago. She has a masters degree in Geography. As the train wound its way through the beautiful countryside of towering cliffs dropping down into the ocean, villages nesteled in the forests or surrounded by cultivated fields, she shared her life story with me. Yueh was born in the US but at 8 months of age was sent back to Tiawan to live with her grandparents. Trying a couple of times to return to the US her bonds to Taipei we too strong and so she returned to this magical land. Her grandparents are now "go to heaven" she told me pointing to the sky. We talked about life on Tiawan, her career and friends, where i should visit in Tiawan and concerns for the environment. She proudly displayed her set of metal chopsticks and a spoon that she carries wherever she goes so she doesnt creat unnecssary trash. Our conversation went on and on as the train snaked its way through the countryside to her distination one stop before mine in Taipei. Her lifelong friend called her on her phone to tell her he was at the station waiting as she gathered her belongings together handing me a sweet cake out of one of her bags.
We said our goodbyes commenting on how wonderful it was to connect and exchanged e mails. "Tell me next time you visit Taipei--my friend and i show you around" She left the train on the opposite side when the station appeared. Looking across the aisle out the opposite window i saw her stop and wave as the train pulled away. i turned to look out my window to see the sun setting over the ocean. The sky was orange and the clouds near the horizon pink and red. Looking up into the sky above the horizon a beautiful cresent moon hung one third of the way up sitting over the colors of the sinking sun.
"My Chinese name Yueh Shia. It mean Lunar and color you see in sky at sunset".
